Some pepole have this picture of "ResEdit" as something that can TRASH their ENTIRE hard drive totally!
I don't know why they think this, the only thing you are modifying is the SINGLE file that you are working with. JUST LIKE A WORD PROCESSOR!
So you have just about the same chance of trashing your hard drive as you would when using "MacWrite" !!
ResEdit is VERY well behaved (I am currently using V2.1) and I have NEVER had ANY problems with it !
It ALWAYS asks you if you want to SAVE any changes, so if you think you messed up, just say NO!
The only thing are modifying is the "modules" file, so you should "duplicate" (see the "finder" file menu) the "modules" file for MUBBS so that you can go back to what you had if need be.
If you want to install a module that you downloaded, you can double click on the "modules" file for MUBBS and ResEdit will start up and load the file.
To see a list of modules in the file, double click on the "MOD1" icon (the only icon in the window).
Under the "file" menu, select "open" and open the NEW MODULE's file.
Get a list of what's in the NEW file by double clicking on it's MOD1 icon (again, it should be the only one there).
Before we go on you need to know that "ID" numbers don't matter with MUBBS, we go by module NAME. So each module needs to have a different name.
Now select the module you want to install by clicking on it to select it.
Go to the edit menu and select "copy" (to copy the new module to the clipboard).
Select the "modules" file by clicking on it's window.
Go the the edit menu and select "Paste" (to put it into the "modules" file).
If there is another module with the same number, it will ask you if you want to assign it a new number, press "unique number" button to assign it a UNUSED number. DON'T WRITE OVER ANY MODULES UNLESS YOU ARE SUPOSTO! (like replacing a older module).
Now the NEW module is installed in the "modules" file!
The easiest way to end is to select "Quit" from the file menu, and it will ask you if you want to save your changes to "modules", say "YES".
That's all there is to it!
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT COMES WITH THE NEW MODULE! It will explain any extra things you may have to do.
If you want to "duplicate" a module that's in the "modules" file, select it like above, copy it and paste it RIGHT BACK, and it will ask you if you want to assign it a new ID number.
To change the NAME or ID of a module, select it. Go to the edit menu and select "Get Info". Then you can change it's name and or number!
